Boo Baby is a Chicago rock trio set on reviving the sweetheart personality of rock's early years. Their upcoming ep "The Opening Band" realizes this best, with a carnival of neo-folk songs that sit nicely beside their influences like Galaxie 500, Lou Reed, and Jonathan Richman. One review has described their shows "a meditation on joy" and their lyrics as being "like a more vibrant Sun Kil Moon." Founders Kevin Tellie and Robert Salazar share a back-of-the-bus wit from playing together for 10+ years (though the band took a break when Salazar stepped away to drum with Lala Lala) and the recent addition of experimental artist Thomas Huston has indeed added more experimental artistry. Discovering their live show feels like stumbling on a mom and pop gas station; friendly faces happy to get your motor runnin'. If you like it, please boo.
Space Gators are an amorphous configuration of smooth style. Their sound is an energetic proclamation, dripping with familiar colors that are scooped up and splashed onto a new canvas. Bringing a transfixing energy to the stage that commands attention, their jovial presence turns any venue into a party of old friends. Founded in the swamps of Chicago, Space Gators continue to travel and meet their family. After all, everyone is a Space Gator.
