Rock show!

Mako Sica is a trio featuring Przemyslaw Drazek, Brent Fuscaldo and Chaetan Newell. In the spirit of Chicago’s explorative artists such as the legendary Sun Ra, Art Ensemble of Chicago, and U.S. Maple (whose guitarist Todd Rittmann recorded Mako Sica’s debut), they create a sound that is all their own. Mako Sica uses guitars, drums, trumpet, and at times extra percussion and electric thumb piano to produce music in the vein of Amon Düül II, Hex-era Earth, and the out-there reaches of the Impulse! Records catalog.

Since the band’s formation, they’ve appeared on releases by La Société Expéditionnaire, Permanent Records, Slow Knife and Plus Tapes, as well as NPR’s syndicated program Radio M. “While Mako Sica is powerful as a rock band, the group’s sound exists somewhere far afield of tradition. A single song might stretch to nearly album length, Mako Sica’s din and rumble arcing into dark, epic grandeur.” (Chicago Tribune)

MINIVAN is a four-piece experimental rock band from Chicago made up of Paul Nixon (bass), Andy Ellis (guitar), Raun Meyn (drums) and Kelly Reynolds (keyboard). MINIVAN’s seemingly normal guitar/bass/drums/keys setup counters expectations, introducing uncommon songwriting elements to balance the simple with the complex. They noticed that by starting with simple repeating riffs, worlds of sound emerged.

Starting by recording their live freeform jam sessions, MINIVAN carefully sorted through their recordings and constructed their songs. Beginning with their favorite sections of the recordings, and by adding elements of chaos to the organic music they created, they discovered a unique sound somewhere between the straightforward motorik beat of Faust and Neu! and the jazz-influenced avant-garde world of Robert Wyatt and Guru Guru.

MINIVAN has recently taken to live performances with plans to record an album in the near future.
